If your elbow pain started less than 48 hours ago, then don't apply heat as it may aggravate your pain. Heat at this stage will increase your swelling which will cause more pressure in your muscles or ligaments which are very sensitive to pressure when injured. Ice is the best option in this scenario. Try applying ice for 10 to 15 minutes and apply it directly on the painful areas while your arm is elevated above your shoulders. Do this for the next 48 hours.
Beyond 48 hours, you may start using heat in combination with ice. Apply heat packs for 10 minutes then ice packs for 5 minutes, and repeat the process 3 to 4 times but always end with the ice pack. Do not use any sports cream, Ben-Gay or any other similar creams at the same time with the heat packs as this will increase your sensation to heat...it will feel like it's burning when you combined them both. Your skin will not burn but it will surely feel uncomfortable. Just apply the cream if you don't have any plans of applying any heat packs at that time.
Rest your elbow until the pain or swelling (if any) have subsided, then gradually start using elbow again. Stop if your pain worsens.
If your pain persists, consult your physician. GOOD LUCK.

it will help with the pain as it provides a cooling effect. make sure you massage it well and also try to not use your elbow if you can for a couple of days.

Ice. Avoid heat (it will increase inflammation and swelling). Best wishes and good luck.
