Ripping means taking the 'information' from the CD and uploading it to a computer. Burning a CD means downloading information from a computer to a CD.

Writing the songs on a CD to your computer's hard drive. This allows you to listen to the music without having the CD in the CD drive, thus saving wear and tear on the drive and making for quieter listening.

some CDs have protections on them to prevent you from getting the music off, ripping the CD is using a program to bypass the protections and get the songs off anyway

the complex art of a laymen.
and the simple task of a tech
ripping is the opposite of burning
terms derived from the act its self:
ripping: a 80's colloquialism to steal is to rip some one off
in this case coping a disc which some pay for
burning: along time ago people thought lasers could only make holes i.e. a laser burned through a tree in the movie "the secret to my success" or another 80's term to burn some one is to deprive them of their share of profits
it used to be pirate code no not the arrr mattie kind
but preferred self label in the 80's of the kind of people some might call "hackers" and "crackers" today
after awhile historically speaking the underground becomes mainstream at least some parts/words

it's the opposite of burning a cd. when you burn, you input data into the cd. when you rip, you copy data from the cd to your hard drive.
