It seems that you have been fortunate enough in your life to never have experienced this phenomenon... when the chips are down, your friends will stay close. Keep in mind though, and never let us forget that we all have weaknesses.... and sometimes supporting us through a difficult time is not something that someone who loves us dearly is emotionally capable of doing. I have found that the key is encircling yourself with friends of many colors, shapes & sizes so that you can take from each one of them what beauty they have to give. That way, no matter what happens in your life, you will never walk alone.

It means even through the times when it's really hard to stick with your friends, maybe when they act like slobs in front of someone you wanted to impress, you don't leave them despite of it.
This saying isn't always right because if your friend cheated on a test, they might say the best way to keep being their friend is to not tell on them, even though telling is the right thing.

it means that:
if u r a good friend u r allways there when ur friend needs u.....
u tell the truth & don't keep secrets.......
that u would never tell a secret of theirs.
+ u won't go off doing something else, when u have allready made plans with ur friends. (bailing on them)
