We are looking to rent a vacation home half way between LA and SFO. This will be for around for 6 families. Any recommendations for what location is good and cheaper? I looked in the Internet but all of them at popular places where it is expensive. Any other recommendations?

Hi,
It all depends on what you would like to do with your free time. If you like the coast which is highway 101, cool evenings, warm days, and some fog I would consider these locations, Paso Robles, San Luis Obisbo, Moro Bay, Pismo Beach, there is a town around here Granda someting, Nipomo, and Santa Maria. Paso Robles is just about 1/2 way. This gives you a larger area than just one town. From any of these locations you can drive north to the Herst Castle in San Simeon, and up the coast through Big Sur, Carmel and Monterey to SFO. South you have Santa Barbara, Ventura, the PCH along Malibu to Santa Monica and into LA. If you take 101 you go through a number of cities.
Now if you like it hot, in the summer around 100, you have the inland areas, off I-5, not a lot of choice's, Fresno, Hanford, Coalinga, maybe Bakersfield. If you like3 email me and I'll pick up a travel guide for you.

Laguna Niguel is in Orange County. That isn't halfway between LA and SF... it's halfway between LA and San Diego.

If you want cheap, you should look into the inland route (Interstate 5) rather than the expensive coastal ones (PCH and Highway 101). This means searching in lackluster places like Fresno rather than San Luis Obispo.

Unfortunately, the Central Valley is not exactly a prime vacation spot. You might want to negotiate for a furnished, temporary rental rather than look for the few available vacation homes:

Try Cambria- it's a very neat little town, and full of vacation home rentals. It's called Cambria Pines by the sea- lots of pine trees, and very cool weather pretty much.

You need to either stay south or north, the middle is not inhabited. The cheapest coastal area north is Half Moon Bay, south it would be Morro Bay.

I like the Ritz Carlton at Laguna Niguel - don't be afraid to splurge - you can't take it with you!!
