We are looking for good gas mileage but are leaning toward the Element because we have occasional snow & understand it has all wheel drive. We also frequently have 1-2 teens and a dog.

Not all Elements are 4wd; there are 2wd versions out there, so be sure that if you want 4wd that you find one and don't get a 2wd thinking its 4wd.

The Element is bullet-proof--great record for reliability. Its got more interior room than the Scion and about the same fuel economy. The interior of the Element is waterproof for the floor and up to 6" so you can hose it out if the dog and the kids trek mud and snow inside. The seats are also "all weather" low maintenance and clean easier.

I'd go with the Element over the Scion if you need comfort and space.

hope that helps

The real world MPG is about 15 or so in an Element and a bit better in the Scion Xb. They are both boxy and have tons of drag. Element would be the better one of those two.

i would go towards the Element because i herd those things are made for college kids because there is no carpet in the car.
