My high schoo, creative writing teacher gave us an assignment like this once...
1. cut the stem into short peices and make jewelery (dremmel makes a tool for that)
2. Remove the ink tube and blow spit balls
3. soda straw
4. pair with a compass for a portable sundial
5. Emergency splint for a broken finger, if you're unlucky enough to have to drive yourself to the clinic.

Write to the Congress and your local officials and tell them what you either like or dislike about our government. Write to the president (although that would have no effect). Let your elected officials know your position and that if they do not agree with you then you will vote them out of office.
