I have done the tour of Silay Mansions several times.

In fact, the tour guide at the Jalandoni (Bernardino-Jalandoni) has become a friend. He is Mr Arceo.

The Balay Negrense (Gaston family) was of special interest to me since one of its descendants (Yves Gaston) was a high school classmate.

The tour took me to the only mansion where someone actually lives. This is the Hofilena Mansion (not as grand as the Gaston "Balay Negrense") where Ramon Hofilena lives. He was once the highest paid male nude model in the country. He will take guests to an interesting tour of his paintings, including one made by Dr Jose Rizal, and some Manansalas. Then, he talks of myths in the art world, like a painting of Hidalgo that actually won just a minor prize in an obscure competition, but people don’t know any better, he says. He showed us prints, and how they are made. There is a donation box somewhere. I dropped a good sum for the impressive tour from someone who knows his art.
