Just want to know if there is some historical basis for this or its just an urban legend.

It has only been within the last few hundred years that bathing has become more acceptable in Europe.
But you have to understand it was believed that bathing caused illness...and when you have common outbreaks of the plague and cholera you tend to avoid the things that you perceive cause these illnesses.
Modern Europeans bathe.

I agree with bootigood.
i live in Europe part-time and get grossed out when we take the bus somewhere. It smells like terrible.
They do bathe here but I know my mother-in-law who was 80 years old didn't shower daily even when she would visit in the states and stay with us. We had two showers and a bath but she would just "sponge" bathe.I don't know why,I would ask my husband and he would just say thay she didn't do anything to get dirty.
I guess we shower too much in the states, I take at least two showers per day maybe three if I go out at night.

Because some of them actually smell.
Specially the older ones, or those coming from rural areas.
Higiene habits have improved a lot in the urban areas in recent times, tough.

many europeans do not use deoderants or antiperspirants, therefore that often smell a little " ripe" as a result we North Americans often think they do not shower. Its not that they don't shower, its that they don't have a phobia of body odors like North Americans do.

no that's Yankees .Northerners. who don't bath regularly and don't shave under there arm pits and appear rude and uneducated.
