One of the most colorful festivals celebrated in the island of Marinduque is the Moriones Festival. Morion means "mask" or "visor," a part of the medieval Roman armor, which covers the face. Moriones, on the other hand, refers to the masked and costumed penitents who march around the town for seven days searching for Longinus. This is a folk-religious festival that re-enacts the story of Longinus, a Roman centurion who was blind in one eye.

Legend has it that Longinus pierced the side of the crucified Christ. The blood that spurted forth touched his blind eye and fully restored his sight. This miracle converted Longinus to Christianity and earned the ire of his fellow centurions. The re-enactment reaches its climax when Longinus is caught and beheaded.

From Holy Monday to Good Friday, male penitents of Marinduque, especially in the towns of Boac, Gasan, Mogpog, and Santa Cruz, wander around the streets wearing folk interpretations of the Roman soldier's costumes topped by moriones (helmets) which are attached to wooden masks painted with growling expressions in enamel. On Good Friday these "soldiers" participate in the kalbaryuhan, the dramatization of the Pasyong Genesis (Passion) in the hut of the pabasa (readings) and the streets of the towns.

On Easter Sunday morning, from nine until noon, the moriones gather for the pugutan (beheading), which tells the story of the conversion of Longino to Christianity and his martyrdom at the hands of Pilate's soldiers. The traditional pugutan was very simple, featuring the search for Longino throughout the town, up coconut trees, and along the seashore, climaxing with Longino's prayer (taken from the Pasyong Genesis) asking Jesus to accept his soul before his beheading. To signify this, Longino's mask is removed and impaled on a sword for all to see.

The festival is characterized by colorful Roman costumes, painted masks and helmets, and brightly colored tunics. The towns of Boac and Mogpog in the island of Marinduque become one gigantic stage.

The Metro Manila Film Festival.

It runs for two weeks, covered by the major press (broadcast and print), and while it is a Metro Manila event, it takes on a national significance. The parade is much anticipated , and so is the awards night. Remember "take it, take it" ?. That line has immortalized this event. One edition of this festival takes up more print media space and airtime than any of the other festivals combined.

Participation is very high. People spend their hard earned money to participate by watching a movie or two during the festival season.

Since the tradition of fiesta is the most significant and ancient event for Filipinos, I think the best Phil festival is the celebration of FIESTAs. Most fiestas are celebrated among patron saints and or the major events in the life of Jesus Christ and His Mother. Examples are Christmas, Quiapo Fiesta, Ati-atihan, Holy Week, Santacruzan, Peñafrancia Fluvial Festival, Antipolo Pilgrimage, Obando Fertility Rites and Carabao Festival. Our Muslim brothers observe the Ramadan of the Hari-raya Puasa Feast. There are also feast that existed prior to Spanish colonialization like the Tengao and Fagfagto which are rituals among the Ifugaos, Bontocs and Kalingas of Mountain Province. Filipino hospitality is legendary and at no time is it more in evidence than at fiesta time.
