Of course "The Stand," but honestly there are some extremely good short stories in "Night shift" that still give me nightmares even after 15 years! Another one of my favorites is "The Jaunt" from a different s.s. collection.

"The Stand." I know a lot of people will say the same. It's about a germ that kills and how it travels through North America. The population is destroyed, except for a few who find each other in a quest to re-form society. Then the book changes into a battle between good and evil. It's a great story.

Absolute favorite was Tommyknockers. (Dog gone it, they butchered it when they made the movie.) Anyway, a lady finds a piece of metal in her back yard. She starts digging it up and discovers its a space ship. She starts changing, from within, into a weird alien. Not only that, but everyone around her starts to manifest strange abilities and super incredible intelligence. Don't remember the ending, but that's because I read it like twenty years ago.
Loved The Dark Half also. A guy dreams he's a killer only to discover that when he was born a twin was left within him. It started growing inside his brain. The doctors did surgery, took it out, but after so many years the darned thing grew back and somehow manifested itself to become human. Real scary dude, that Stephen King. Love him.

Obvious answer is The Stand. But I also put that equally with The Dark Tower series as well. The Dark Tower is about a gunslinger and his quest to find the Tower that stands at the nexus of all creation. It's not so much horror as dark fantasy. Amazing books.

Sometimes a classic horror novel is always the best and what is more classic then a vampire tale.
