I'm always "downing" myself. Whenever I write a paper or take an exam, I say to myself "I failed" or "I did horribly"....then I get the exam or paper back and I got an A. When I have to peer review other students' research papers I always think theirs are so much better than mine and I end up getting a better grade.

For instance, I just wrote a research paper and thought it was awful. I was embarrassed to turn it in. I ended up getting a 92% .The average class grade was 56%

I'm a senior in college with a 3.7 gpa and I wonder to myself how I did so well...or I think that my professors obviously don't know bad work when they see it.

I'm this way at work as well. I'm always doubting myself and think I'm incompetent. Where did this stem from? What can I do to change my self destructive thoughts?

create a chart.

(1) identify -ve thoughts.
(2) list then down one-by-one.
(3) rate on a scale of 1 to 10 how self-detructive or non-harmful each statement is.
(4) rank them from most self-destructive to least
(5) beside each, write a NEUTRAL statement tat replace the negative thought. for e.g. "i am ashame to hand in my work" becomes "I have tried my best and will hand it up anyway. Just see how it goes"
(6) practice the NEUTRAL statements.
(7) feel the difference!
