Burr Weed could be a lot of different plants.
There isnt any herbal remedies for weed killing in the way that you are thinking.
We get several burrs and prickles here. We eradicated three corner jacks, by walking on the lawn with thongs - the footware type, not the but type. Keep scraping them off into a bucket and either burn them or put them in the rubbish.
Get rid of burrs by 1- run over the area with your lawn mower as low as it can go. 2. walk all over it with an old fluffy jumper that the burrs love to stick to. - dispose of the burrs and the jumper.
I guess you could also vacume them up with a garden vacume. Might be a big job....
Can you add a layer of new soil over the top. When the burrs germinate it should be fairly simple to pick them.
Organically, you can pour boiling water over the plant. It wont collect the burrs, but it should kill the plant.
Pouring salt water over should also kill them, but its not good for your soil, or anything that tries to grow there afterwards.
Scorch, burn them with a flamethrower or hot steam.
]Get your soil checked out. Most burrs and weeds dont like good soil, but thrive in poor soil that has been drained of all the nutrients.
Every plant that you let grow and then go to seed multiplies the burr problem, so keep pulling them out.
As for the dog, there is several booties that you can buy, or even make your own with some thick strong material.

Understand the problems the pooch encounters.

Here's a link from NCSU: note "control measures" near the top of the Page_
http://www.turffiles.ncsu.edu/turfid/csPagedPdField.aspx?PlantID=SOVPT

I would suggest that you search for the County Extension for your area and see what herbicide is best for your region.
http://www.csrees.usda.gov/Extension/index.html

You just might want to invest in some "booties" for your buddy until you can get the situation under control.

I can tell you that most likely need an effective elimination now that they've emerged.
I would use "Roundup" [glyphosphate].
See what's recommended for the pre-emergent seed to control next season.
A good lawn crowds out the light and prevents many of the seeds from propagating.

I understand a "desire" to use something "herbal", but chemical and toxic are not necessarily synonymous.
There is a proliferation of so-called advice of the dangers of household chemicals.
So often however the lack of knowledge of basic science or just how "toxic" a compound might be plays into the fears.

Do some research about what the content of a warning label actually means and learn what about LD-50.

I'm all for the "Silent Spring" movement, but not everything is DDT.

Good Luck

They're called "Sand Spurs" or "Goat Head" stickers. The female is the offender. They grow from a central point, radiating out.

Allow them to "flower" to identify the bad, bite you girls. Lift the running stems toward the center. They will break easily, a survival mechanism. Grab all of the stems, close to the ground and pull. They come out easily (not so with the male pollenators).

Using chemicals will encourage them to flower and go to seed, procreating their species. Another survival trick.

Takes patience and pulling, but can be done. I can walk barefoot in my front yard now!
