I am in disbelief that Bush vetoed the SCHIP legislature. This was supported by both parties as well as the majority of Americans. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives passed it. I cannot believe that Bush pulled such a stunt. It's not like he even needs to cozy up to big business to finance another campaign - he could have left the presidency with at least this positive legacy behind him. Instead, he vetoes this program. It wasn't even money taken from other parts of the budget - it was a tax on cigarettes which would have paid for it! The man must be insane.

What does everyone else think? Insane or just plain stupid?

Also, please don't make this a dem vs. rep argument. It's neither. I believe this is about one man's act of selfishness (or stupidity?) and not about party politics. After all, he even went against his own party on this one. I'm just curious if some of you want to chime in on this with your opinion.

The reason Bush vetoed the law is because he knows what a disaster it is. The law would cover families that make up to $83,000 a year and children are defined as "under 25". This bill is just another attempt at buying votes. It is not the government's job to throw money around for no reason. The issue is not with having safety nets but with creating yet another nanny state.

He vetoed a 35 billion dollar spending program that would have not reached the people it was intended to help. He wanted a 5 billion dollar plan. That would have done some good. Sounds like a good idea to me. Or do you like people in Congress trying to buy your vote?

It would not help his constituency. Big oil Haliburton etc. He will do anything that helpd them and veto spending that doesn't.

They will get my tax money for this Socialist Communist plan when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. Show me where in the Constitution where it says that Government should supply Health Care. These Socialist Dems are out of control.

If you have kids and want this Communist plan, then people with kids should have to pay a much higher tax rate. If you don't have kids and will never benefit from having your money ripped from you, then you should pay a lower tax rate. If you can't afford to pay for health care for your kids, don't have them.
