Is it more common in Christianity or is that a coincidence?

Preschool children who like to be in charge and run things tend to be covering up some weakness. They often turn out to have learning disabilities. By being in control of the action they avoid having to understand what others are telling them and they avoid having to answer questions. This is an instinctual way to avoid letting others see who they really are.

Most religions control the people because that is their function. Before there were scientific explanations for things, god was the explanation. Then people figured out that god was a good way to control people. So if you wanted to control the people all you need is a connection to god. If god speaks to you, you get to tell people what god says. You can then control the people by telling them the rule is from god. Religion and government were the same thing. Religions co-existed with government in control of the people for most of recorded history. After the general population became literate and thus were able to learn more about the world, people began to question what other people were saying about god. Populations rebelled and overthrew these controlling religion/governments.

To sum up, control freaks are covering up for some weakness they feel they have themselves.
As K.K. says, some people do like to be controlled and manipulated, especially those who wield power and control others at work. They like to be dominated in their private life.
This is why the vocal ultra religious often turn out to have secret immoral lives. "I think thou doest protest too much."

Typically, control freaks and manipulators have a low opinion of themselves.
My opinion in regards to the religion topic is that it is a coincidence.

People control and manipulate others because they enjoy having power over others and getting what they want. And they lack the moral scruples that would tell them this is wrong.

Everyone enjoys power and everyone likes to get what they want. Not everyone thinks it is ok to take advantage of other people to get those things, though.

I don't think that any religion has any particular corner on the evil market. They probably all take their own share.
