Basically I am terrified constantly that someone is going to hurt me or something. Especially at night. I feel like I am always looking over my shoulder and waiting for something horrible to happen to me.

when I was young, I watched a horror movie and since then, I was so scared that someone would chop my head off at sleep. You know what I did? I put a little bolster across my neck whenever I went to sleep for several years! I can't remember when and I suddenly realised I don't need the little bolster again one day. I'm cured! Overcome your fear by "little defense" that you may think of and eventually you might walk out from your fear.

You could be having a (could be minor) case of monophobia (or also called autophobia or isolaphobia). One is ok when other people/friends/relatives are around but once alone (esp at night), fear creeps in, followed by (sometimes severe) anxiety, panic attacks, etc..
There is belief that one may have had this phobia due to a past negative experience(s) when left alone, and the mind is trying to prevent that from happening again (thus not wanting to be alone ever again).
There are solutions, but takes a bit of time and a lot of effort and courage from you. At least you have done the first step to admit this problem.
I'd recommend that you see a phyiciatrist or counsellor who can properly diagnose and treat you. There are also many self-help DVDs/CDs/Books out there to help on the fear or being alone, but I do not know their effectiveness.

Your fears in present time are restimulations of fears from the past. They could go as far back as past lives, whether you believe it or not. If you want to eliminate or "disappear" the fears you have in present time, fears which seem to be irrational and without any explanation, then you need to do some processing (or auditing) that removes these irrational (reactive mind-based) fears from your present time behaviors. Then you'll be free and you'll be released, literally.

Do you think that you are actually safe? Do you put yourself in dangerous situations, especially at night? If you think that your fears are not rational or reasonable then you should go to see a psychologist to help you deal with these fears.
