I am decorating a model home and I want to use a Chess Set to decorate a rec room table. In your opinion, should the chess pieces be set so as to look like there is a game in progress or a not. (All pieces in their original position)

I prefer the nice clean look of a set-up board.

Leave everything in the starting position. Two reasons for this. First you won't have to repeatedly answer questions about who's winning, or who was playing etc. Second, it's more likely that someone will sit down to play if the board is set up and ready to go. If it looks like a game in progress, many people will simply pass it by, not wanting to mess up someone else's game.

well if your displaying it on a table i would set it up as it should be not as if it were in play. by having it look like its in play it makes the people feel like someone lives there which causes discomfort, while there there you want them to envision themselves living in the house not someone else ,so if they envision someone sitting there playing chess before they came in and running and hiding while there there it feels like someone else's house. don't think it would make or break it either way of course but little things like that should be considered because they do add up. i think a model home should have no food smells no personal items at all, furniture should be neutral but high end and a minimum of furniture for each room so it feels large.

"Game in progress.
When Bobby Fisher took the championship away from the Russians. When he made a sacrifice 20 moves ahead."

-so says my 15 yo chess prodigy son.

I'm going with 7 moves white and 6 moves black, one pawn each off the board. The white pawn toppled over and the black pawn still standing.
