It is hard to tell this without seeing it - but if the cardigan is the thick kind and the black dress is a bit more dainty, then I'd say yes - it will dress it down. If it looks kind of wierd to you (or if you have a friend who has good fashion sense) - then don't wear it.
Why are you wearing the cardigan - are you trying to keep warm? Sometimes wearing a wrap will keep you warm while still allowing you to look dressy.

Yes, a regular knit cardigan will dress it down.
Try a lacy shawl, a fancy [ evening - crochet, embroidered, lace ] sweater, or even a velvet jacket [ a rich red or purple would be great ].

its okay, but yes, the cardigan would dress down the whole "formal" look.
