I have basic mechanical knowledge. I have a 99 volkswagon jetta 5spd manual. Car has been running great until today when I started it up all the cylinders weren't firing which I assumed because it was idling really rough and having a hard time moving in first gear. Check engine light came on while in nuetral and began flashing when I put it in gear. What I'm hoping is good news is that I just bought some gas, ran it for 5 miles, stopped for an hour came back out and this happened. Do you think it is bad gas? What else could it be? How do I prove and get the gas station to pay for that if it is their fault?

It is your emission control valve. Nothing serious. It is not your gas station's fault either.
It is just a coincidence that the gas you filled up and this occurrence all came together.

Next step? Take it to a garage. They will connect a diagnostic machine, determine the code and reset it. Your flashing light will be gone. It will come back again of course after some 5 or 6000 miles unless you get the valve replaced. I suggest you keep doing the resetting until you could not stand the flashing light anymore.

Most garages do not charge for resetting if you are nice to them.

You said gas so I know it isn't diesel. If you are misfiring, there's a few things to check before you go burn down the gas station. Maybe you've got a bad wire to a plug. Maybe your distributor cap cracked. Maybe you've neglected to replace your fuel filter for 8 years. A lot of maybes. A good mechanic would check all of those "maybes". The engine light came on because the EMC told it there was a problem. I don't think it is the fuel. Something happened to the electrical or fuel system.

If there was an impurity in the gas then your gas filter may be clogged. Try changing it.
There is no way to hold the gas station at fault.

Take your car to Autozone and let them hook their computer reader to your car. It will give what codes are and a description of what is wrong. They do this for free with no pressure to buy anything. If it is bad gas then hopefully you have your receipt to prove when you bought it. Good luck

flashing light could be a bad thing your manual will recommend that you do not drive it. and should take it to the dealer. it flashes because whatever is wrong is dangering the catalytic converters ( emissions system )
