I can't play anything perfectly in terms of gaps or slipping hands. Even though I know the piece forwards and backwards, I still make mistakes because I think tooo much about it. I play VERY musically and have REAL good control over my hands. I practiced this Chopin etude(no.18) for a YEAR. I know every section perfectly. I know it perfectly overall, but when I feel like playing it to enjoy (not practicing) I still keep making mistakes EVEN THOUGH I am concentrating my head off. HELP ME!!!! it doesn't seem like a technical issue to me.

The problem actually has to do with practice and memorization methods, and not with your technique.

Make sure you are not reinforcing bad habits and practicing mistakes. They are difficult to remove from you mechanical memory, and they always seem to turn up in the stress of performance, even though you though that you had taken care of them.

Often such problems are a symptom of relying too much on mechanical memory and not having adequate backup memorization systems in place.

One of my teachers would not let me play a note of certain passages until I could prove to him it was memorized (!!) Sometimes I would have to recite it to him like a telephone number -- other times he would hand me a page of manusript and have me write it out -- dynamics, phrasing and all. Or he would have me recite the harmonic progression involved. I nearly went mad.

Have you tried mental practice -- playing the piece entirely in your head? That is very reinforcing as well.

So while you think you know the piece backwards and forwards, obviously, because of the evidence of these slips, you don't.

Good luck. Be patient and dilligent and determined.

Glinzek pretty much got it all ... just one more thing ... try taking those parts where you seem to make mistakes the bar before and the bar after and relearn them perfectly and repeat them over and over till your hands remember that that is the correct way to play them ... I seem to have that problem occasionally in easier parts of some pieces and this works for me ..... good luck!
