1. Call KCBS Radio in San Francisco. They are the all-news station for the whole Bay area and one of their reporters in their traffic watch section should have some info on where it happened. The number is: (415) 765-4000.
2. Once you've found out where it happened, contact the California Highway Patrol (if it happened on a freeway) or the local police department of the accident site.
3. You can also check the below web site and try to use their search function for the SF Chronicle since it has been less than ten days since he died.

Maybe you could get with the police department in the area where the accident happened. They might be able to give you a copy of the report...i dont know if they give that kind of info out to the general public or not. Maybe try to find out the names of some of the officers who investigated the accident, they might be willing to give you some basic info on what happened.
If that doesnt work, maybe wait a couple weeks and then contact someone from his family, explain who you are and ask what happened. I would wait a while for that option so as not to bother them at this time.

You can start by looking in the local newspaper for an obituary. It has probably been published by now. You can either buy a paper, or see if the local paper publishes obits online. If the family published his picture with his obit, you should be able to find it, and thereby find his last name.

Once you have his first and last name, you can type it into a search on your local paper's website to see if you can pull up an article about the car crash. You might also use "car accident" or "fatal car accident" as search words.

You might also try the websites of local news stations. They might have brief accounts of recently televised stories.

You can do a search for local newspapers on-line. The only one that comes to mind is The San Francisco Chronicle but I'm sure a google search will turn up many more and go their archives for that date. Good luck.
