I am going to school to become a CNM, certified nurse midwife. Now I have always said that I want to practice under a DR and deliver in hospitals but I have witnessed more and more home births and they have been extrodinary!!!! I have even seen a lotus birth, which is something that not many hospitals will allow, at least I don't think. Anyway just wondering what the general consesus is on this matter. I am seriously considering doing both hospital and home births now!!!

Totally agree Shantally Hospitals are for sick ppl and pregnant women are not sick, most of the time.

I personally think homebirths are beautiful and NATURAL.Ido not see why a low risk, healthy individual would HAVE to go to the hospital.Hospitals are for sick ppl...pregnant women are not sick :)

eta: havana, things can go wrong eitherway...Ilost my daughter and she was born in a hospital.Sometimes nothing can be done, doesn't matter where the child is born. And I said LOW risk, not "NO" risk. Its very obvious that things could go either way. I frequent a forum for natural living and know many women whove had both and all of them preferred homebirth over a hospital bed, ivs, unnecessary meds , etc. They loved being in the comfort of their own home where ANYONE can attend the birth .Alot of ppl , including myself, have had terrible hospital experiences....

Well women have been giving birth since the beginning of time.. WAY before hospitals and doctors were "invented" lol. Birth is very natural..

BUT things can definitely go wrong as well and without the proper tools and/or training it could be fatal.

As long as i felt as safe as i would in a hospital i might try it, but until then i think I'm gonna leave it to the professionals in the professional setting.

If ur considering doing home births all the power to u.. a lot of women would rather give birth at home which means the world needs more people like u.. if it interests u go for it!!

i'm pregnant with my first, and I think i'm going to feel more comfortable being in the hospital personally. I will feel comfortable with the nurse/midwife delivering if she is the one on call because she has handled a lot of my appointments during my pregnancy.

i, however, am not one who wants to do the full "natural" experience so to speak. I want an epidural, and I want other pain things that I would be afraid wouldn't be available at home. other people may feel very differently.

Depends on the woman and the pregnancy. Smokers, diabetics, obese women are better off in a hospital. Me, I wish I could have stayed home. I was only in labor 5 hours with my 1st son. They would only let in 2 people. It was sickning. Then they boss you around the whole time and put you in a room way small for someone who just had a baby. I had a really easy delivery, what 3 pushes? I could've done that on my own. :) And in the comfort of my own home with soft towels, good a/c and thick blankets.

It wouldn't be something I'd choose to do, but each his own I guess. I think a baby should be born wherever the mother is most comfortable. I'd rather be some place where help and technology is right there in case something went horrible wrong....and it happens more than you think. I'm a volunteer in a nursery at a hospital and one nurse in one day had to revive 3 babies born who quit breathing.

I've not really thought about giving birth at home but I would choose to go to the hospital just in case something would happen I'm there where they have everything.

I know of women who have done both... the ones that had their babies at home with a midwife have nothing but positive things to say about it.. the only horror stories I've heard have been in a hospital.. not saying that someone hasn't had a bad experience at home.. I'm just saying.. I've not heard of one.

It's funny where people draw the line on "natural". So it's more "natural" to have a baby at home, while laying on your manufactured bed, stuffed with man made metal springs, surrounded by stain-resistant poly-cotton blend sheets, listening to music that's been digitally recorded onto a man-made compact disc, playing through a stereo that's using 12V of electricity... yep, I'm sure that's how the pilgrims did it.

Personally, I think home births are a bit selfish. Of course things can go wrong anywhere, but they are much better equipped to deal with it at a hospital than in your master bath. Why take the risk?

I would never want a home birth because I would never want something to go wrong and my baby or me to die. I don't care if I had a wonderful healthy pregnancy or not, I would never in a million years put my baby's health at risk. Thats just my opinion tho- and to each is own. :)

My personal opinion is that people should have babies at a hospital.
in my opinion i would feel terrible if i chose a home birth and something went wrong, i would feel guilty that it was my fault.

things can go wrong even in a low risk pregnancy.

i would worry about needing a c section etc.
