The 'significance' of it is to give Superman a superstitious double take. Every time he runs into someone with the intials LL. he is supposed to think "Oh, no! What's going to happen now...? Is this person a friend or foe? So many times in my life, I've run into people with the intials LL, and they always turn out to be..." and then it gets used as a writer's device for introducing flashbacks and memories.

Go to the site Superman Through the Ages, where they have the greatest Superman stories of the past on line for free. I think there was one called Superman's Day of Doom, and I won't spoil the ending for you, but you will see what I mean, there is a long sequence where Superman is exposed to Kryptonite and there's nobody around to help him. He's lying there, helpless, suffering, wondering why none of his close friends come to help him (they're all busy) and if his enemies will finally get to rejoice that he's dead. You get the idea. The dying man's life flashes before his eyes.

Back in the Golden Age of comic names that both first and last name start with the same sound were more comon than they are now. This led to many of the names in Superman. The LL started before Superman's Kryptonian name of Kal-L later Kal-El was revieled. however if you take Kal-El backwards you get Le-Lak pronounced L Lack. Many later witers built on this as an inside joke.

Lois Lane. Maybe a private reference to his working partner on the Daily Planet, and his "secret " love.

Also, Linda Lee (Danvers)--I 'm talking about the original Supergirl-Kara Zorel..I think it had something to do with him being from the House of EL on Krypton.
