I would buy the

FX 74 set of processors
Asus 4x4 L1N64 board
16 Gigs of ram
1 Multilayer DVD player
1 Dual Layer Blue Ray Burner
12 150 Gig 15000RPM RAptor Hard Drives
4 GeForce 8800 GTX OC's
A 1600 Watt BFG Power Supply
I havent found a case that is large enough for this so a custom see thru case with A memory card reader and as many USB ports as it can support.
Water cooling system

And once AMD finally releases the 4 core FX processors I would buy 2 of those and put those in it.

Laurnece L umm 1 TB of ram isnt available at all yet 16 gigs is about as much as you can get and the only OS right now that will support that much is Windows Vista Ultimate edition

If money is no object, start of with 800 watt power supply, ddr3 memory, the new top end AMD phenom quad chip and up to 128 gigabytes of memory, dual video cards, 7.1 sound system and two 24 inch flat screen monitors, 4 x 500 gigabyte hard drives, highest spec sound card you can get and at least five fans to keep everything cool. if you want to run games you will not be able to use Linux and that is starting to attract hackers any way, go for Vista Ultimate, if you fancy having external drives as an extra go for fire wire 2 and go for either four 750 gb drives or wait until the 1 TB drives are out in four or five months. That should keep you going for a while

desktop-probably 8-core Phenoms when they come out with four geforce 8800gtxultras, overclocked, a MSI motherboard wit h nice OC features, 50 optical drives, 2 hard drves(that's the maximum number of hard drves) of 1 tb each, 3 scsi 15000 rpm 150 gb hard drives, a nice sound ard, and all the add-ons I can get, plus 1 tb of ram.
EDIT:oops, I was getting into supercomputer territory. I would get a gene/l supercomputer if I could, but the maximum right now is 16 gb, so I'll dig with that.

I'd get a laptop with a docking station, so that it could easily be used as a desktop as well. In my book, it's the best of both worlds :-)

I'd buy the hardware for my own desktop. You can purchase the state of the art hardware and keep it up to date really easily.

Oh, that's what I already do....
