Its healthy, but more importantly, they are surrounded by water and have very good fishing waters. Historically, fish is cheaper than beef or pork. Same reason people in the south eat a lot of pork and fried food. historically, a family could raise a pig for nothing and render lard from it to cook in. see what I mean?

I guess a more modern answer would be that Japan is an island, and because they are surrounded by water, seafood is a big part of their diet. Japan is also not a very good place for agricultural development, which is why they often import a lot of their products.

But historically speaking, in Japan it was considered a kind of taboo to eat meat (except for those living in the mountainous regions where they hunted game meat), so fish was considered an exclusion from the meat taboo.

Because Japan is a collection of small and large islands. It is easy to catch fish in almost any location on the islands. Fishing is a common career there. They don't have enough land to grow many vegetables or raise animals for food.
