I've been thinking about pursuing my MBA but am not exactly sure which road to pursue, the regular MBA or Executive MBA. I've heard positives and negatives about both programs but want to get different points of view. What is your opinion as far as quality, costs and time spent in school?

From everything I've been reading, the monetary value in any MBA from any nontraditional program, or from a traditional program at a 2nd or 3rd-rank school, is diminishing rapidly. The division between the best and the rest has grown in terms of monetary rewards.

In addition, there seem to be secret hidden differences in how you are treated at a given school -- for example, at some business schools only the regular traditional fulltime students are invited to the meet&greet recruitment affairs.

So if you are acquiring an MBA to jumpstart your career or move it up a notch, you may want to be more skeptical about anything but the traditional programs at the best schools.

I am not an expert but have just been looking into it on my own account. I was only looking into it for the intellectual challenge, and was a little bummed by what I found -- if I had been going into it for the money, I would have been even more disappointed.

The quality of the institution is what is most important. An EMBA from Duke or Wharton is better than an MBA from most schools.

At the top schools, the education is nearly identical. I taught the same course to EMBA and MBA students at both Wharton and Maryland. The students are similar in quality to those in the full time programs at both schools. The big drawback to EMBA programs is that the number of electives you can take are limited. The classes usually vote on which classes will be taught. If you are a finance guy mixed in with a lot of marketing types -- you are in trouble.
