In many states, you pay property taxes "in arrears",which means you are paying now for last year's taxes.

If you JUST dropped from the title, then NEXT years bill should reflect that.

Contact your tax office again with any legal paperwork you have showing your removal from obligation (quitclaim, or whatever you did to drop from title) and be sure to communicate who is now responsible. Again remember, it won't show until next year in most cases.

Good luck.

The bottom line is that someone has to pay the property taxes. As you were on title the bill went out to you but most likely the bill went to all the people on title. So if you and 5 family members were on title it would have gone out to all of you. I would decide among your family who is going to pay the bill - you may want to pro-rate it for how long each of you were living there.
Next year as you are not on title you will not get a bill. The tax department run off a list of registered owners as of a certain date - you were on title then but you will not be next year.

Real estate property taxes are assessed against the owners of record. This included you, because you were on title of record (if it was only for part of the period, they should be pro-rated)

On the other hand, the property taxes are for a set amount. If the current owners pay them, you don't owe the county anything. That's the best way to handle it - get them to pay voluntarily

In Missouri, if you owned the property any time during the year, you are still required to pay taxes on it (they are pro-rated). You may not own it now, but you still have to pay for the part of the year you did own it. I do not know where you are located, but I suspect it's the same there.

I had to do this with a car I no longer owned. If you have some sort of proof you sold the house and no longer the resident take it to the tax office and they should release you from the taxes on it.

Call the county assessor's office and ask what you need to do to be taken off the record. They will probably ask for a copy of your closing statement, so find it.
