Let me rephrase above. I guess it is an article, but thats not what I can label it as, so what would you label it as within the parts of speech if you had to?

THE is a definite article because it is used to modify a specific noun--the house, the dog, etc.

If your only choice is adjective or adverb, then pick adverb because it's more closely related to an adverb than an adjective.

It's usually a definitive article, HOWEVER, it can also be used as part of an adverb depending on how you use it. For example, if you say, "The quicker we get this done, the faster we'll be able to play." In that case, it would be part of the adverb "quicker" (i.e., "The quicker we....") and the adverb "faster" (i.e., "... the faster....").

But if you use it in front of noun, then it would be a definitive article. For example, "The house blew away during the storm." There is no adverb in that sentence (other than "away") and the word "the" is used to say "the house" as opposed to "a house" (hence, the definitive being not just ANY house blew away, but rather, "THE house."

You should've looked it up yourself. It's first p.o.s. is suppose to be a definite article. It also has adverb so if it had to be one of the above it would be adverb, but I suggest definite article.

"the" is an article but since it tells which one (ex: Please hand me the marker. "the" tells you which marker.) in can be called an adjective.
