I wasn't a "hippie" I was in the U.S. Army and a Ranger, I was sent to 'Nam in the mid '60's and listened to the hippies put us down for doing our duty while they run to Canada, they run from their duty for their country. They accepted the free food stamps because they didn't work, they called us service men names and spit at us, I broke a few noses when I came back.
It made me and, many more mad that these people that called themselves Americans shirked their duties as Americans and, ran from the draft, burned their draft cards. They let us go and fight, get killed, maimed and wounded but, they ran like the dogs they were.
I was wounded twice. Once while trying to pull 38 kids out of a burning school the Cong set afire to slow us down, knowing we'd stop to help them. Another time in the Northern Highlands of the Hmong trying to help them defend themselves from the Cong, that were killing them because they wouldn't accept their doctrine.

Whether or not you were a hippie during the 1960s depends in part on economic class, racial group, section of the US in which you lived, and, of course, your age. If you were blue collar male who came of age from 1965 to 1970, you more likely spent your time wadding through rice paddies in Vietnam while your upper middle class counterparts enjoyed the luxury of a college deferment. If you were a lower-income African American, you probably resented the hippies that moved into low-rent housing and raised the rents. The rural Midwest and South didn't really have that many hippies while California had more than its share.
As for myself, I was a small town Texas high school student during the late 1960s. The nearest "hippies" were probably 100 miles away at the University of Texas.

I was an adult in the 1960s. During that entire decade I was an enlisted Hospital Corpsman in the Navy. So, I wasn't a hippie.

I was running around in red gumboots during the 60's emulating the wet-look and being totally in love with Paul McCartney. I wished I could have worn false eyelashes with loads of mascara and eyeliner and teased my hair into a bee's nest. I loved the hippie look with its ankle bells, bangles, flowers and flowing skirts, but probably wouldn't have liked travelling around in a rusty combie van smoking dope all the time and wandering aimlessly around the countryside in search of concerts and free love. I think a lot of great ideas came out of that era though.

I wasnt a hippie I was in the service guarding 1 OF OURAIRBASES IN THAILAND!!!---- I didnt resent the hippie movement 98% of it at least. We listened to Rock & Roll music on base and smoked our share of pot as well. We had our Tie Dyed shirts and headbands when off duty. I even got in some of the free love when I got back!!!----Now The 2% I didnt like!!!!! They could March and protest all they wanted at the White House or State capitols no problem. BUT BUT when we arrived back home and they did this at the airports and threw beer cans at us and screamed Baby Killer--Spit At us--And called us War Mongers that was Way out of line!!!!----We had NO CHOICE We had to GO-- we were drafted at least we had the GUTS to Go and DIDNT RUN TO CANADA!!! We Went to War or WENT TO JAIL!!! ---- BUT even on returning to the World as we called it I was to regimented to become a full fledged Hippie!!!! AND I HAD IT EASY OVER THERE WASNT IN THE GRASS IN COMBAT---GOD BLESS ALL MY BROTHERS WHO WERE AND ESPECIALLY THE OVER 58,000 WHO DIDNT COME BACK!!!!
