Not worth wasting too much time discussing the issue. Besides, ABC has already issued an apology. So, let the case rest.

'Desperate Housewives' apology over Philippines slur

MANILA (AFP) - Makers of hit US television series "Desperate Housewives" have apologised for a slur against Filipino medical workers that caused an uproar in the Southeast Asian country.

The apology was sent to Philippine broadcaster ABS-CBN's bureau in the United States and aired in the Philippines on Thursday following protests by the Manila government.

"The producers of 'Desperate Housewives' and ABC Studios offer our sincere apologies for any offense caused by the brief reference in the season premiere," cable news channnel ANC quoted the statement as saying.

"There was no intent to disparage the integrity of any aspect of the medical community in the Philippines," it said.

The episode showed actress Teri Hatcher, who plays Susan Mayer, asking during a medical consultation to check "those diplomas because I want to make sure that they're not from some med school in the Philippines."

The apology was made a day after chief aide to Philippine President Gloria Arroyo said the line of dialogue appeared to be a "racial slur."

Philippine Senators said the apology was not enough, and urged their Foreign Affairs Department to lodge a formal protest with the US government.

"I am mortally offended by the statement because it betrayed the racial prejudice and denigrates the excellent performance of world-class Filipino doctors in the US," said Senator Miriam Santiago, whose sister is a doctor working in Los Angeles.

its a good thing i checked yap just a minute ago, otherwise i would have been frustrated seeing the same q 50 times.

anyway to put in my 2 cents worth. it is meant to be funny, but if youd ask me they shouldnt have done that, imagine if they have mentioned another country other than the philippines, they would probably have a lawsuit going on by now.

anyway having said all that, if anybody out there got offended by this, there is this petition page you can go to:

http://www.PetitionOnline.com/FilABC/

lastly, the way i see it, this is not really an attack on the medical competency of the filipino but rather an attack on every filipino working or studying abroad who will provide a philippine diploma because there will always be this doubt that is it dubious. & if you havent been in that situation yet, then you probably do not know how it would feel.

just my thoughts.

We had a doctor, a very good doctor, who would fall asleep when treating patients. This went on for years until one of the guys at work made jokes about it in a large group, only then was the problem fixed. The thing about protests, is thy are a democratic way to get change. But the media has another way by simply stating things in a way that is insulting but yet also true. There are doctors in the PI who are terrible, and while the story line said PHilippines license, it did not say Filipino's. She wasn't looking at skin but at where the person went to medical school. So this is an opportunity to strenghten Philippine colleges of medicine.

I am not a Filipino.
I do not think that this was a racist comment at all. I do think it's funny and maybe a little insulting to the Filipino's but come on don't you guys make the same sort of jokes about different nationalities on your shows.
We had a Filipina actress/singer do a show here in Australia, this week. During her talk session she made fun of the Aussie accent was this racist, heck no, was it funny sure was.

It's a pity that Filipino's can't get this agitated about the political scene in their country.

Are fake Diplomas, certificates etc. obtainable for a fee in the Philippines. If, as I think, they are, then maybe this is what the show is having a go at. And , if this is so, shouldn't all this indignation be aimed at this situation.

just another media hype.

why, did filipinos react when local movies and tv shows makes similar statements against its own talents and professionals?

to the enraged tagalog population, how come no one reacts when you insult the bisaya population with your accents in tagalog movies and tv shows?

we all have the option to ignore or treat it as a dare for our medical schools. for me i think the latter is better, not to insult our medical profession but to improve it to make us known worldwide in a good way.
