I guess they could, but the ants you observe are called worker ants. They have a short life. They are busy getting food to raise the next generation. It is what they do. They don't have a large brain to sit around and contemplate things with. They are not individuals; they are almost like cells in a larger organism which is the colony. Sitting still brings them no advantage.

Perhaps when the temperatures drop and they can't move would be a time when they are immobile other than that I know when I have ants in my pants I find it quite difficult to sit still!

When I was a little kid, I used to dig these little dirt bridges and tunnels for my cars and toys. I'd see ants sometimes and I've got to tell you they will sit still for a second just before they change their course of travel.

Yes when you give them something sweet to eat . They will sit still long enough to eat it. I give them TERRO they will eat it and take it back to the nest and then they die. I do not like to kill them but I hate them in my house too even more.
