parafin wax is one by product. diesel fuel used to be a by product until they got a market for it and could sell it. now its a product.

The hydrocarbons that are used to produce Gasoline, were once petroleum by-products and were sent to flare (burn stack), for disposal.
Look at the multi-billions of dollars, pounds ..etc. of revenue it now brings to governments through taxation, and to companies as profit.
