Isolation from established civilization, extreme hardship, and a struggling economy united the American colonists through shared experiences. On the onset of the American Revolution, a realization that their hard work was to ultimately pay for a war they did not participate in, the colonists decided emancipation from a mother country that did not respect the colony was far more appealing than dependence on the crown for subsistence forever.
