I have broken my toes so many times before especially my pinky toe. Make sure to stay off that foot as much as possible and alternate between ice and heat on it. The doctor really can't do much for a toe except tell you to stay off of it and prescribe something for pain. You may need to walk on crutches if you cannot walk normally as well until the toe heals.

The cost would not be much more than a standard office visit, if the toe is deformed and turning colors, you might want to at least have it checked. There is not much a doctor can do for a broken toe, unless it is the big toe, then he may attempt to set it. otherwise keep icing it to keep swelling down and tape it the next toe, this will help with some of the pain and may allow you to walk on it. the doctor may also prescribe you anti-inflammatory or pain medications to help you through the worst of it. Even without breaking the skin there is some risk of infection, so major changes in color should be looked at.

Wrap the toe in soft cotton, then tape it to the toe next to it. Elevate your foot and apply ice for about 10 min. at least two times every hour. If can take Ibupofen or tylenol that might be good. An Aleve can help reduce the swelling but don't touch if you react to naproxen. If you can take aleve, I'd go with 1 aleve and two ibuprofen (or tylenol) tablets. Emergency rooms are pricey. But, if your deductible is high, just pay for a visit to your regular physician. It can't be more than $75 bucks for a consult. I know My doc, I get a discount if I pay cash in full and average $38 for a consult. Save the high deductible for the serious stuff.

RE: Go to doctor for broken toe? I broke my big toe a couple days ago. It has been quite painful as can be expected, but not unbearable as long as I baby it. Some people think I should go to the doctor, but I dont think there is any sense to go. Pretty much the whole top of my toe turned purple and now blackish, and the side of...

having broke both my big toes yes you have a broken toe not much a doctor can do for it since they dont make cast to fit your toe, stay off your foot prop it at least waist high when you sit down if your toe nail is black an purple looking it may have to be removed that will help the swelling go down if has to be removed, best thing is find a foot doctor alot of them will take payments just dont turn it into the insurance

Well, I did it twice, the third toe on each foot. I didn't go to the doctor because I felt there was not much that they could do. It's up to you to make that decision. Depending on how much it hurts. If the pain is getting worse you might think about seeing a doctor.

I done the same thing but it did not change colors on me but a DR. really cant do anything about a broken toe. They will tell you to put some ice on it to keep the swelling down but if you don't want to go to the ER just set up a app. and see a DR. at your local clinic. That would be cheaper on you.

I would question the pain going to your ankle moreso. But usually nothing for broken toe....I did the same thing about a year ago, doc said he couldn't do anything...hurt like hell turned black almost, but I got over it and I guess it healed on it's own. But if yours is seriously bent, a doc can put a splint on it to reshape it, that's what I would do...or you can do your own...just tape your toe to one next to it and leave it that way for a good week.

I would go to the doctor. i broke my toe 5-6 years ago and cant move it now, and when i accidently stub it against something and do move it, it hurts like hell. I would go so it wont get worse. you should treat all broken bones seriously.

Yeah it is most likely broken. If it is your big toe, you need to get to the Dr. Even if it isn't the color change indicates you might have some circulation issues that need to be addressed. They will tape it for you, and if it is your big toe, they may actually have to set and splint it.
