There are two types of pure substances.

Elements are substances made of only one kind of atom. Oxygen, carbon, iron, potassium, aluminum, and helium are all examples of elements. There are 92 naturally occurring elements. At the close of 1999, there are 20 more elements which have been produced artifically in the laboratory. Scientists strive to produce more.

Compounds are substances which are made from chemical combinations of two or more elements combined in definite amounts. Table salt is compound made from the element sodium and the element chlorine = NaCl. Common sugar, sucrose, is made from the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen = C H O.

Elements and Compounds are the two types of pure substances. An example for an element would be Hg (mercury.) And for a compound one would be C6H12O6 (glucose and the big numbers are suppose to be little.)

Hope that helps.
Gotta' love Chemistry.

first of all a pure substance is only made out of one type of atom so gold can be one. also water isn't because it has two different types of atoms, Hydrogen and Oxygen. look on a periodic table of elements to find some other ones (i can't give you the complete answer that'd be cheating)

A pure substance is a form of matter that has a definite composition and distinct properties.

It may consist of only one type of atoms

examples: Fe(s), N2(g), S8(s)

Or of only one compound where the atoms are connected in a defined way,

examples: FeS(s), CH4(g), NaNO3(s), H2O(l).

A pur substance concits of only 1 atom. So element off the periodic table of elements will work such as potassium (k), gold, radium. So that would be your answer.
