"Provide for the common defense" means to dig in and do your part to help your neighbors and yourself. Protect your country from hostile invaders by serving in the military or willingly pay taxes to support your armed forces. Make sacrifices in times of war (rationing during World War II).
On a much lesser scale, you can add chipping in to overcome natural disasters, standing up for your rights and the rights of those being oppressed. In short, make the United States of America the best place to live.
