regarding graduates of SOME medical schools in the Philippines?
Im a Filipino and I was not insulted because its really true. Its a sad reality that our government must take a serious look rather than condemning Teri Hatcher. That statement of her should serve as an eye-opener for the government/schools to improve the quality of education in the Philippines. The result of recent medical board exams shows how many aspires to become a doctor but only few are qualified. Can you imagine computer schools like AMA and STI offerring medical courses? Only in the Philippines.
Not only that, isnt it that we Filipinos also make fun of Japanese for being 'Sakang', Africans for being "Unggoy". Indians for being "mabaho" and Chinese for "eating Cat" and "source of piracy in the whole world". We always watch our local comedians maligns these people in out movies and TV shows.

Japs,
you go to Recto and you will have a BS Medicine or BS Political science in less than 30 minutes. Then you're telling me Philippine diploma are not doubtful? Its been there been since the 1970's but the government is not doing anything to close those diploma "factory" along Recto.
I've been in that situation so many times. Foreign companies always doubt/belittle IT/computer graduates from Phils (I'm an IT specialist) because there are so many fly by night computer schools in the Philippines. Operating without license and their graduates doesnt even know whats the difference between Windows XP and MS Word.
The bottomline line is, the government must act on all forms of corruption so that we would improve our educational system and prove to the world that we are not just Filipinos but world-class Filipinos.

i beg to differ though, for the way i see it this is not really an attack on the medical competency of the filipino or their medical schools but rather it is an attack on every filipino working or studying abroad who will provide a philippine diploma because there will always be this doubt that is it dubious.
& if you havent been in that situation yet, then you probably do not know how it would feel. & that is why some "kababayans" (fellow filipinos) living abroad have reacted to it so strongly.
anyway having said all that, if anybody out there got offended by this, there is this petition page you can go to:
http://www.PetitionOnline.com/FilABC/
Additional:
thanks for the info about recto, i know about that & i know that there are people who do patronize their services. but there are people like you, me & millions of other fellow filipinos who have gotten their certificates & diplomas by doing the hard work & a big number of them based abroad. & those are the ones that have this reason to vent out against such a comment that was potentially seen & heard by 120M+ people worldwide on tv & more on the web.
anyway, i know that it was meant to be funny, but being funny over the expense of a race, ethnicity or any protected class is not only uncool but morally wrong & politically incorrect.
& if you'd ask me they shouldnt have done that, imagine if they have mentioned another country other than the philippines, they would probably have a lawsuit going on by now. yes, regardless if it was the truth.

Most probably don't care less. Hate to shock you but Desperate Housewives probably isn't capturing a big share of the Filipino viewing audience. I mean the whole show is politically incorrect. Ok its a show about a bunch of sex craved horny cheating wivess (wait that sounds good), who are heartless, act stupid, say tactliss things etc. I mean they were in character.
I'm in Nursing, and my wife is of course a filipino nurse and I get it. The show isn't a documentary, it's not on the history channel. Gosh.
And of course it is ironic because in the Philippines a foreigner cannot get a PRC license to work as a doctor or nurse. Even a person born, and raised in the PI who's parents are not Filipino cannot be a Philippines citizen and cannot get a license. Even if that person goes to UP or Santo Thomas. Not long ago here on YA Philippines a young Filipina Nursing Graduate was having trouble because although she was born and had lived her whole life in PI, she couldn't get a PRC license, and by the way she couldnt' get GGFNS because of that, and by the way she couldn't even take the NCLEX because of this one law in the PI.

I'm also a Filipino but I don't get offended by it. There are more better things to talk about rather than just picking some dialog in TV series. It's just a fiction. People who get offended by it probably don't watch David Letterman or Jay Leno who usually say something about other race. The only difference is these other nations who being addressed to are not bitter and they have a better understanding that its all just a show. We Filipinos should better look into more serious matters so we can clean up our own act.

What was said was an insult not only to the medical schools here in the Philippines but in the whole education system here as well. Medicine is one of the highest degree an individual can earn from school aside from PhD or a law degree. Many Filipinos pass Licensure examinations in the states. Is'nt this enough proof that the standards here are the same as what they have in the US.
If you were not insulted with what was said in Desperate Housewives then Im sorry but I dont think you should call yourself a Filipino. Plus, obviously you do discriminate even against your fellow Filipinos, the fact that you question, AMA and STI isnt that discrimination? Listent to yourself.....Thats why Im not surprised you are not hurt...Question: Are you sure you are a Filipino?

I am not a Filipino.
I do not think that this was a racist comment at all. I do think it's funny and maybe a little insulting to the Filipino's but come on don't you guys make the same sort of jokes about other nationalities on your shows.
We had a Filipina actress/singer do a show here in Australia, this week. During her talk session she made fun of the Aussie accent was this racist, heck no, was it funny sure was.
It's a pity that Filipino's can't get this agitated about the political scene in their country.
Maybe the crux of the problem is that fake Diplomas, certificates etc. are obtainable for a fee in the Philippines. If, as I think, they are then maybe this is what the show is having a go at. And , if this is so, shouldn't all this indignation be aimed at this situation.

you have your point alright.
but what comes before the 'challenge' is the insult.
It was shown worldwide, the larger screen, and you don't expect people laughing at it, taking it as an 'all joke'.
This will have neagtive effects on mind of those who were made to believe that Filipino doctors are no good. Some are but that doesn't mean all. That might lead to a dirty reputation and worst, boycott.

I think it was meant as a ruse. Can you imagine the percentage increase in TV ratings this episode generated?
I'll rest my case.
