It is called 'Freedom of Expression' and guaranteed under the First Amendment. It pains me that I spent time in SE Asia to protect his right to wear it, but I don't have to pick him up if his car breaks down on the highway, either.

I am upset because I HATE the use of words such as F*** in public places. I 100% agree with his right to believe this, and wear it (in a more public friendly way), and state it (among adults).
I believe it is ignorant and foolish. I believe few people will listen to him. Let's get real, at some point in our lives we did something stupid just to get attention. Many of us fell for some retoric and supported a cause that we are now embarrased about.
PS re flag burning. Flag burning is LEGAL in the US, as is having it soaked in urine as it was at one exhibit. Here is a tidbit from wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_desecration
The ritualized burning of the American flag is considered an appropriate way to dispose of a damaged or soiled flag. Flags are burned in retirement ceremonies by the American Legion, Boy Scouts,[4] The Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Sons of the American Legion.[5]
Flying an American flag upside down is not necessarily meant as political protest. The practice has its origin in a military distress signal; displaying a flag in this manner is "a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property"[14]; it has been used by extension to make a statement about distress in civic, political, or other areas.
While desecration of the American flag is legal in the United States, it is illegal to "deface, defile or contemptuously abuse" the Confederate flag in the state of Florida. Three men were arrested for burning the flag at Yale University, though this arrest had little to do with flag desecration laws, as the students were burning a flag that they did not own. They were arrested for destroying private property and endangering the lives and property of nearby residents.[6]

It is probably politically motivated. It could be a cry for attention, or he could just have been bored. The American way of life under G.W.B could also have spark his sudden **** you approach to the U.S
In reply to JR's comment... burning a flag of a country is a way of saying you hate that country. Yet look at RATM, they decided to burn the American flag and they also hang the flag upside down. It is not a way of saying you hate the country... it is a protest against everything that it stands for and it that is why you see people on the 6:00 news burning flags of the USA because they are protesting against what the flag stands for as well as the country . Forgive me as i have just rambled sentences that contain no structure.

Part of the reason the US is such a great nation is because people have the right to speak out, no matter what they believe. In communist countries you cannot question the government, but last I checked, the US isn't a communist country.

Yes it's legal because of the freedom of speech law. However AD is wrong, it's still illigal to burn a flag!!! You're supposed to take them to the VFW or American Legion Hall for them to dispose of a ragged flag. Burning the American Flag is a way of saying you hate America. If this is how someone feels then they should leave this country!!

Think seriously does it really matter? Its just a jacket.
Why not simply say:
Look man no offence but why are you here if you hate the place?
Then if he has a go at you... great you're defending yourself from assault kick his face in.

Appalling, yes. Illegal, no.
It is Freedom of Speech. You may not like what he says, or wears, but it is his right to wear it.
