Well, after twenty years of PTA, cupcakes, room-mothering, washing, cooking, cleaning, chauffeuring, wiping noses, feeding the hogs on our farm, mowing the lawn and paying the bills, on pretty much the same day, I graduated from college finally, shipped my ingrates off to college, dumped their father, moved to the Rockies and lived with a bunch of adorable, highly intellectual pot-smoking Buddhist monks in a beautiful, hidden mountain village 11,000 feet in the clouds. I travel everywhere, fish and canoe every day, snow-shoe, started jumping out of airplanes, published some nature coloring books, got gorgeous and date billionaires, avoid my children like the plague and have been having a rather wonderful life ever since, to say the least. : )

A mother is for life, even after the kids leave home :)
I'll be working of course and following my other pursuits and hobbies, but will always be there to lend a hand if needed.
Edit- Rio, I'm a Sahm :) Ok, I understand now.

It depends largely on the person. The first answer to this question is, obviously
WHATEVER THEY WANT!
All kidding aside, some of them go to school, or start using the education they had already. Some of them get jobs, some of them volunteer, some of them get their children out of the nest just in time to start taking care of their parents or in-laws, some of them get depressed and cry a lot, some of them fall into the bottle, some of them get divorced, some of them enjoy a few years off then start doing daycare for their grandchildren, some of them finally do the things they were always waiting to do, some of them adopt more children or become foster parents, some of them go nuts.
There are as many answers to that question as their are women wondering what they are going to do with the rest of their lives.

Well, my boyfriend's sister is a SAHM but they have a full-time live-in nanny and housekeeper, and she volunteers for an animal shelter (we took two of the dogs from her shelter). She is also *incredibly* beautiful - and I am not exaggerating, the woman is one of the most gorgeous I've ever seen - and at 40, I'm sure it takes work. She goes for facials and mani-pedis and chemical peels and stuff.

Having spent so much of Their lives tending to the needs of others They get on with enjoying what is left of Theirs. This could mean education, career, hobbies, personal recreational pursuits, or whatever takes Their fancy. And why shouldn't They? We each make choices. Some of Us however have to put Our dreams on hold for the good of Our children.

WHatever they feel like doing. I assume those with a heart become active in the community or some caritative installation.

from the ones that i know, they get really lonely and constantly call and 'check' on their kids via constant phone calls. Then they go through a period of depression when their kids stop answering their constant phone calls. At this time, they pick up hobbies and slowly get back into society. Having gone through it from the child's stand point, it's not something i would do to myself. My life would not pause for kids because no matter how you see it or want it to be, you will always be a different and seperate individual from your kids

Note that none of the SAHM's have answered this one yet.
My mom stayed at home until both my brother and I were in school, and then she went back to university. It was, in my opinion, the best decision she's ever made.
EDIT TO SHIVERS: I meant the housewife warriors. You're more reasonable than they are.

I'm guessing cooking, cleaning and all of the other housework. However I'm not a stay at home mom and will never be, so I guess I shouldn't have much of a say.
