If anyone has ever been in doubt about the true nature and spirit of a Thoroughbred, watch this. Who ever put this together did a fantastic job. This horse has inspired me all my life - he was our National hero! I think the clip says it all.

However I will say that for a gelding, he still had more balls than you!

He had pedalostitis which is where the coffin bone loses mineral. He would run and always be changing legs. When Ginger McCain bought him, he was immediately lame so they started taking him into the water and he then went on to win 5 races on good to hard ground.

We have a piece of his tail back home at the farm coiled in a box. Rummy was in his late teens and would go all over England opening stores and supermarkets etc and he was opening a local seaside holiday camp in Bogner. He was boarded for the night at a local racing yard and everyone including my dad cut a few strands from his tail to save. I lived at the other end of the country at the time and never got to see him. My dad said he was everything you could have ever imagined.

I never heard of Red Rum, but I don't follow regular racing that much, let alone Steeple Chasing. Still, a cool video --- so, what was the incurable disease in his feet? Navicular? Kind of interesting that he was walked in the ocean before every race -- makes semi-sense, too - I guess, like epsom salt, they were figuring the sea salt would make his feet feel better.

Amazing that he could do all that with bad feet. Truly goes to the show the incredible spirit that horses posses - and their undying willingness to perform for their people.

I bet there are some real tear jerker videos on there about Ruffian......... I couldn't watch one, I'd tear up just thinking about her. If I watched some tribute video, I'd die crying.

I went to the Kentucky Horse Park a few years ago, and saw the most gut-wrenching tribute video to Secretariat there. It was soooooooooooooooooooo sad.

Wow I knew of Red Rum but i never knew he raced the Gn that many times or that he had an incurable didease in his feet. Did you ever get to see him in person? He sure was one gorgeous horse. I have seen the Ruffian tributes on there Amanda L and they will make you cry. I am a die-hard Ruffian fan even though I came around about 7 years after that fatal race. I read an article about he rin reader's digest and got hooked on her story when in middle school. I have tons of Ruffian memrobilia. She was a grand one too! Have you seent eh movie ESPN put out about her? it's awesome and will make you sob, very graphic, they show he breaking down and I don't mean an actual clip they have SFX it and everything so you see the break and damage it does..... gut wrenching.

Rummy has always been one of my favorites. He made an impact on many people and the horse buisness. I am sure he inspired more than a few people to pursure there passion for working with horses. He is a true class act.

That was a great clip. Thoroughbreds are truly one of the most amazing animals. I had to do a little research, really wasn't sure who Red Rum was. Absolutely amazing. After watching your clip, I came across one of Barboro. It was almost too hard to watch. They will definitely never be forgotten.

Wow. Definetly shows bond between horse and rider. Also shows inexplicable will of horse to please. As a Thoroughbred owner, i know how willing they are and have heard many stories about Thoroughbreds who have totally thrown out their backs but kept fighting until they had to be rested because of other lamenesses. What amazing creatures.
