My husband and I are in a situation where I honestly can't afford to work due to price of gas and a babysitter. The thing is, I ow the military a LOT of money from when I was enlisted. They overpayed me once I got out, but I thought it was back pay from when they screwed up my checks and didn't pay me for a few months. I don't have the money to pay them (I used to give them my taxes) right now! What do I do?!

I'm just going to add that my husband are looking into me getting a job and make enough money for child care...but is the military going to garnish my husbands checks until then? I haven't heard from them in over a year and I'm quite nervous.

I have been both. My first husband and I divorced when my daughter was 2 and I was a single mom and worked. Now I am a stay at home mom and I can tell you that being a single mom and working was by far the hardest thing I have ever done.. for me staying at home is a cake walk..I have 3 a home right now ages 14, 8 and 4 and although at times it is kind of crazy it is by far easier than when I had 1 and worked. I have all the sympathy for working moms and single moms it's not easy as a matter of fact it is damn hard. My hats are off to you..keep up the good work and rest assured it will get easier .

The question should be what can they do? If they do not have your bank account (direct deposit) from when you were in, ther is no way for them to get the money until you decide to give it to them, As one of the people that answered said, call and try to set up a payment plan,

Now, how much money are you talking about, the military does not pay that well for you to "used to give them my taxes" for years like you insinuate and are still in a situation of having to pay them. You really mean that you can honestly say that you "thought" it was back pay for a few months and that the couple of extra thousand dollars they paid you "ONCE" was not even questioned or put in to a safe place until you were sure of it being yours.

i certainitly hope no one on this is going to tell you to not pay it back, call DFAS and try to set up a payment plan. As a last option, sell your computer, turn off the internet, get rid of your cell phone, turn off the cable TV and pay what you owe.

I know that sounds harsh, but you have to realize no one owes you anything.

Believe me I know someone this happend to. ITs like school loans, the government will find a way for you to pay it back. Try starting a fund raiser.

Oh please I got thumbs downs? They will find a way for it to be payed back, I wasn't trying to be a jerk!
