So you can see your way to the front door or through the garage after coming home to a dark house. The delay has an override if you don't want it to come on. Look in your owners manual.

The purpose of the delay is so that you have light to see where you are going when you leave the car and are going into your house(or in the garage to get to the light switch). As for draining the battery, the batteries are designed to start the car after 2 hrs.with the lights on/car off.The 30-60 seconds the stay on wont effect a battery in descent condition.

The purpose of them is at night give you time to get into your house. They allow you time to get to your house without falling all over the place. I have found them extremely helpful. No, they do not drain the battery. They are not on long enough to do even a little damage. If any damage is done the alternator will recharge the battery the next the car is started.

To illuminate the driveway and entrance to your house to get inside then turn off. Most are adjustable to instant off to up to 3 minutes. The headlight draw is recharged in the first 3 minutes of engine run when you start back up in the morning. Batterys love big quick drains and complete recharges. Glove box light or trunk light left on at the airport will kill that battey quick and it will not recharge or internally short out.

its just a timer that you can set that will keep the headlight on for a few seconds up to minute or two until you can get out and enter your home, its considered to be a safety device, some call it a security device, either way it will keep the lights on for a while once you exit a car, good luck with it.
