x = number of votes the loser got
x + 310 = number of votes the winner got

x + x + 310 = 840
2x + 310 = 840
2x + 310 - 310 = 840 - 310
2x = 530
2x/2 = 530/2
x = 265

So, the loser received 265 votes.

Let x be the number of votes that the loser get. therefore winner will be x+310.

x+x+310=840
2x+310=840
2x=530
x=265

loser get 265 votes
winner get 575 votes
add back the total is 840 votes.

w = 310 + L
w + L = 840
(substitute w with '310 + L')
310 + L + L = 840
310 + 2L = 840
-310 -310
2L = 530
2L/2 = 530/2
L= 265

The loser got 265 votes

winner got 575
loser got 265

w+l=840
diff 310
if tie, both would get 420
1/2 the diff is 155
add 155 to W and subtract 155 from L
420+155=winners tot=575
420-155 losers tot=265
