Help! I have a part time job, and I have to water my boss's garden (for some reason, that sounds like a sexual innuendo, but moving on.. LOL..) and sometimes I see yellowjackets - only if it's sunny out.

So, I am literally out there w/ my heart racing and running to and fro when a yellowjacket bursts out from nowhere into my face. I'm fine with normal bees, but yellowjackets... are like "gangsta insects"! Their motivation for their existence is to KILL KILL KILL.

I use those Bounce dryer sheets, but it doesn't always work. I've been stung by one before, and it hurt so bad I actually passed out. O_O

So, how do I keep those little segments of Satan away from me? Staying still when one approaches doesn't work - it's like nailing myself to a cross. I don't use fragrant products, or wear exceptionally bright colors.

Maybe you need to carry a small spray can of insecticide that will knock them down. The big cans have a powerful ingredient but they only spray a skinny stream and it is hard to hit a little insect with a skinny stream from the can. Getting something with a spray nozzle, even if it is less potent, would help.

Did you try looking around to see where they seem to be coming from? If you can spot their nest (gray papery looking dome) you can soak it with that strong spray. That will kill them all for this season.

As far as I know, yellow jacket nests are below ground. So far this year I have been stung 6 times by ground bees and once by a hornet. You really will live through it but I was pretty miserable each time. As far as yellow jackets go, they seem to smell fear. It is like you are giving off yellow jacket pheromones. The more fear, the more attraction. I hate yellow-jackets. Avon Skin So Soft is the best insect repellent I have found. Also with yellowjackets, do not carry or have anything sweet like a can of pop. Since you are subjected to being where they are at, get a can of raid Wasp and Hornet spray. It kills them instantly. Do not fool around with any other product such as outdoor flying insect killer. Get em dead on with Raid. And I am a certifed naturalist and Master Gardener but yellow jackets deserve death. They can repeatedly sting and not die like your honeybee does when she stings.

Don't wear the color yellow as they're attracted to it - all those hummingbird feeders with yellow flowers on them usually attract more yellow-jackets than hummingbirds. This time of year, when they're trying to store up food to keep the queen alive through the winter, they're particularly aggressive. I'm allergic so I know how they can terrorize a person. You might ask your boss to install yellow-jacket traps in areas of the yard where you don't have to water to hopefully draw them away..

The bee is thirsty. You are spraying the water.

The bee comes around you trying to get to the water.

Let the bee.....be.

One thing to remember....if you run from them....run into the wind. It's hard for them to fly into the wind...but if you run with it...they will nail you real quick.

Light clothes ( whites ) are the best to wear....for some reason it's harder for them to see you.
