I would like to know what the government's basis is for taking it upon themselves to decide who can marry who. While I, myself, am not gay, I don't feel that it's any of my business, nor is it anybody else's, if two men or two women want to formalize their relationship with a marital union. Can anybody explain to me why the government has the right to ban same-sex marriage?

the government feels they have the right to say that same sex cant marry because it says they arent allowed in the bible. the marrage laws in america are based on the christian marrige rules. although the seperation of church and state says that they cant do that (meaning that making gay marrige against the law is against the constitution but our leaders seem to think they dont have to follow the constitution).

so in a nut shell

gay marrige is against the law because the country is run by christians who feel its is their right to disobey the laws they swore to uphold and enforce the christian laws that have no place in the government of the USA.

but you know treason isnt a big deal i guess

It's not they're banning same-sex marriage. It's that they aren't providing legal benefits of such a marriage. If two men or women want to get together and dedicate their lives together - they can do that. If they want to engage in contracts similar those in marriage, they can do that (it's just not as simple). I personally don't believe the government should be recognizing marriage at all. I don't think single people should have to partially subsidize marriages. I also believe that marriage is a religious act. Civil unions should be brought in to give legal protections to whatever combination people want to get involved in.

Be prepared, if gay marriages are accepted - it will further complicate an already fractured health insurance system.

The government doesn't regulate who can call themselves married. The debate regarding same-sex marriage is limited solely to who receives the governmental benefits of marriage (such as joint taxes, inheritance, etc.) The government, since it controls these benefits, can give them out to whoever it wishes.

Same-sex marriage is not a crime. Two gay men can get a priest to marry them and live together if they want, anywhere in the US. The state just won't recognize it, that's all.

I don't think the government has the right. Last time I looked this was a free country. Something I hear mentioned is Social Security benefits. But what's the difference? If a spouse dies benefits are paid. If everyone were straight they would still be paying someone. I am not gay either, but I believe live and let live.

Marriage, opposite to 3 different solutions, isn't approximately procreation (even with the undeniable fact that, we are fairly keen to maintain attempting to make a toddler if it makes them happy XP) and not the only factors of the christian or the different faith. Marriage is a promise of dedication and provides advantages to the two events. i might like my dating to be recognized, i prefer to be acknolodged and given each and all the rights that a guy might get in my place. 2 human beings in a loving, committed dating is a marriage. we are already getting married and have been via fact the beginning up of the human race. awesome now we purely prefer the healthcare and social and criminal advantages that should pass with it. <3

I agree. Why should they not be allowed to get tax cuts and other benefits married men and women get. I'm not gay either and I'm more right winged thinking but this is an issue that makes me mad. They should have that right I mean what is the big deal. I hate people who give the excuse marriage is a sanction between a man and a woman. Its not like they want to get married in a church..just have the legal right to do it.

yeah with you on that - big differnce in my mind between civil and church weddings. Not really sure what the rational connectin is.

I don't care if church xyz hates its members and won't sanctin marriages. That is betwen them and their god.

But why should the government, who sanctions marriage as an inducement on behavior in exchange for benefits while still here on earth, exclude those who can perform the non-religious aspects of the induced behavior?

I don't get it either.

based upon your question, i can assume that you're a democrat. anyways, the government always have the right to decide what is right and wrong for our nation. it is funny to me when people say that they don't want the government to get involve in peoples life but if something tragic happens, they will be the first one to complain to the government is lazy. if you have problem with it then leave and go to Europe. to answer your question directly, yes. it is wrong for two of the same sex people to get married. god created Adam and eve, not Adam and Steve.

They don't. The church has the right to refuse to conduct a religious ceremony, at their discetion. In fact, our priest will not batpize any baby if he thinks the parents just want the kid "done". It has to have some meaning to the parents before he will do it.

Everyone has the right to protection under the law. That means everyone, including persons with whose lifestyle we disagree. That means protection of shared property, support and alimony, and all the protections under the law that heterosexual persons enjoy.

We should not and cannot be deciding who is and who is not morally entitled to protection under the law.

Meat---Why do same sex couples need to be married? It's the same thing there. Homosexual couples want to be married, because they want to be treated as equals and have the right to be. They are citizens of this country and everyone that is a citizen should have the same rights. That is the purpose of laws and our government should realize that.
