Our feeling of sadness and grief naturally make us feel there is no color in lives with the loss of loved ones. Thus, black is the best color to signify our feeling - feeling of sadness, grief, loss and emptiness at the loss of someone in the world.

As I was told years ago, the practice started long ago when there were few dyes. Most clothing was undyed; just drab. Royalty were able to afford purple (hence purple stands for royalty) made from the murex shell. Black was an easy color to come up with in a dye; the use of black was used simply because there were few colors. People were sad when someone died (grieving) so they did not want to wear "glad rags", but somber ones.
Long ago, those who could hired professional mourners who would weep for you!

Black is worn for morning, I guess, because it's a dark color. Most people find it depressing because its the color of the darkness at night, and I guess that somewhere along the line, someone decided it was for mourning because when someone dies, its depressing.

I'm just the oposit, though: I wear all black all the time and colors when I'm depressed. Lol.

I am led to believe that only in the Western Countries that black is used. Other cultures use different colours I was told that the Chinese use white but I do not know that for a fact.
