I was fifteen when I read it. But if your into non fiction then you should read "In Cold Blood". Its about two murders who go to Holcomb county and the book follows their every step. ITS AMAZING.
Then there is "Catcher in the Rye" and "How to Kill a Mockingbird." they were all requiered reading where I live but they turned out to be absolutly amazing! Those are my three favorite books.. well were when i was in junior high and highschool.
other than that the "Harry Potter" series but most people have read that. and the Twilight series (by Stephenie Myer) but that might be a little much for 13.. its a little much for 20 sometimes with the wording the writer uses.. altho it is met for teenagers. Its written through a girls POV

GOOD LUCK

Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. Great for a boy or girl: about fitting in at school, being an individual, learning about people and life, and wonderfully well-written.

I also love anything by Robin McKinley (if you like fantasy/fairy tales). She has some Newbery award winners, and some great fairy tale retellings. But Deerskin and Sunshine are way too adult.

Harry Potter series is really good, and grows up with you.

My 7th & 8th graders loved Inkheart and Dragonrider, both by Cornelia Funke.

And it's never too early to start Tolkien's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings!! True classics and the grandaddy of most fantasy.

Someone Like You by Sarah Dessen. Actually any book by Sarah Dessen is great for adolescent girls, boys might not feel the same way.
The Giver also seemed to be a favorite for many of my friends, boys and girls, in late middle and early high school.

Hey! Here's my list of my absoloute favorite books! I guartentee you'll love them if you read them! I have guys and girl friends who've read and loved them! There's a little blurb I wrote about what each one is about too!

Twilight by Stepanie Meyer. (folloed by New Moon and Eclipse)
-Twilight is about a girl who falls in love with a vampire. I can't say anything else without spoiling it but I swear! This is such agood book!

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton(single book)
-It's a book about some kids in gangs and stuff and they sort of have their own territories around the city but one day something horrible happens and things take a terrible turn! Super good book!

Song of the Lioness Quarter. First book is "ALANNA: The First Adventure. (3 books to follow plus other quartets)
-A girl named Alanna wants to be a knight and her brother wants to be a great sorcerer but Alan, her identical twin brother doens't want to be a knight and Alanna doesn't want to learn magic.
Alanna hides her true identity as a girl and goes to become a knight acting as a boy.I couldn't put this book down! It was sooo good!
