Nevertheless, my favorite "child" is most likely Jane Eyre. The first real adult book I ever read, and her writing is unbelievable.
Otherwise, the Lord of the Rings would be a close 2nd, if not tied. I love fantasy/fairy tales, and LOTR is pretty much the forerunner of all my other favorite authors.
I'll also read anything by Robin McKinley or Patricia McKillip, and, also, I am a huge Harry Potter fan.
