I want to be a writer and I've found I like the noir fiction genre which is like a mystery/detective/crime genre. I want to read more of these authors to help me become a better writer. Does anyone know of any of the best authors in this genre? Thanks a lot.

Noir and detective genres are practically the same, if not identical. In essence, if the focus is on the detective, you're going to get a noir detective story. You can deduce this by glancing through a few pages and seeing where the focus is. Otherwise, if a detective's in it but not truly the focus, you're going to get a thriller such as Silence of the Lambs. Another focus is the cityscape. This adds the grit that is common in the noir genre.

I hope that helps you find some good detective novels.

I would disagree with many of the people answering the question. Noir is a very specific type of detective fiction, one with a very bleak world view, where things do not end up happy at the end and one where the protagonist is flawed, and whose flaws hurt him during the course of the story.

David Goodis
James M. Cain
Cornell Woolrich
Jim Thompson

All of these are good examples. Robert Parker is a PI writer, not noir.

There's a great two volume collection published by the Library of America (available I would think at most public libraries) called Crime Novels: American Noir of the 30s and 40s (vol 1) and 50s (vol 2). They have a total of 11 great novels in the genre, by Cornell Woolrich, David Goodis et al.
