Diethyl ether is a common laboratory solvent. It has limited solubility in water, thus it is commonly used for liquid-liquid extraction. Being less dense than water, the ether layer is usually on top Im Not sure but its is counterpart Dichloromethane (DCM) or methylene chloride is the chemical compound with the formula CH2Cl2. It is widely used as a solvent??????

That's right. both are common lab solvents. Dichloromethane is imiscible in water so it can be used for extractions also, though being more dense then water it is on the bottom. all info is right not sure what your question is? Dichloromethane is very widly used as a solvent primarily because it is the least toxic of the chlorinated solvents, but with similar properties. Can be used in place of chloroform

Well, diethyl ether is used in anesthesia. If it is commonly used as a solvent, it would seem rather dangerous to handle. The fumes could knock someone out cold.

I believe methylene chloride is carcinogenic. I wouldn't want to use that in a lab either.

Chloroform is toxic ( cancer causing substance ), while diethyl ether is inert, and it can separate from its solute easily due to its low boiling point. For me diethyl ether is the better solvent.

ok, im not too sure what the question is but diethyl ether is basically a covalent organic solvent

the reason its used as a lab solvent is because it has weak intermolecular forces, so many non polar compounds can be dissolved in it.

dichloromethane and methylene chloride are two names for the same compound, i.e. CH2Cl2 ... it is a common solvent. not sure if this is what you are asking?
