2(L+W) = 2(9+5) = 28

but since 4 corner tiles are common to lenght and width, you just count them once

28-4

ans: 24 tiles

hope this helps

Because the corner tiles are the same for the width/height, you can only count them for one of the sides. Thus:

# wall tiles = (# tiles in height x 2) + ((# tiles in width - 2) x 2)
# wall tiles = (9 x 2) + ((5 - 2) x 2)
# wall tiles = (9 x 2) + (3 x 2)
# wall tiles = 18 + 6
# wall tiles = 24

All they really want is the length around the edges of the rectangle. Since it is 9X5 you would take 9+9+5+5. 9+9 because the two long sides are nine tiles each and 5+5 because the two short sides are 5 tiles each. So the answer would be 28

I stand corrected. It would be 24 for the reasons stated above.

You would take the perimeter, which is 2(9)+2(5)= 28 tiles that touch the walls. The area is 45 tiles.

you are finding the perimeter so you add up all the sides.

9+9+5+5=28

but you are double counting the corners so you have to subtract 4

24 tiles
